Literal and metaphorical ties in Waiting for Godot Essay Set against the backdrop of desolation and inactivity, Beckett presents us with the underlying nature of human relationships, through the social dynamics of Pozzo and Lucky, and Vladimir and Estragon. We are shown their emotional reliance, interdependence, and inability for severance, through the extended metaphor of ‘ties’ and the ubiquitous imagery of ropes and ‘being tied’. Pozzo and Lucky are tied both physically, through a rope, and emotionally, through their need for each other. Vladimir and Estragon are tied less concretely, but no less significantly, through their emotional interdependence and through other, more literal ties, such as the rope they talk about hanging themselves with. These ties seem to act as an equaliser, bringing forward the similarities of these complex relationships, and putting forward universally Beckett’s main assertion in this extended metaphor – our need for human contact and companionship. The only rope we ever see in Waiting for Godot is the rope that ties Pozzo to Lucky. This seems to be the most concrete, the most solid tie in Waiting for Godot, yet its insight into the relationship of Pozzo and Lucky is verisimilar, or at least quite cursory. We are given the idea that Pozzo is the master, and Lucky is the slave, at least as far as physical aspects of their relationship goes. We see how Lucky carries Pozzo’s bags, and how he dances for Pozzo’s amusement. Yet, this idea of their relationship is only verisimilar, as it does not show how mutually involved it is, and how it is not Pozzo who has complete control. Just as Pozzo has mastery of Lucky in the physical aspect of their relationship, it is Lucky who has the mastery of the mental and emotional aspects. Lucky makes Pozzo cry, completely unexpectedly :‘P: He used to be so kind . . . so helpful . . . and entertaining . . . my good angel . . . and now . . . he’s killing me.’ (p. 27 ). Lucky makes Pozzo completely unable to act when he begins his monologue, it is Lucky who seemed to have given Pozzo all the grand ideas which he later on pontifocates. But their relationship goes on further, from a struggle for dominance, to an emotional interdependence, and inability for severance. The rope around Lucky’s neck does not just tie Lucky to Pozzo, but the both of them to each other. This relationship is not simply about this constant power-play; their struggle for dominance has become that which makes them so emotionally interdependent. Pozzo explains that Lucky ‘wants to mollify me so that I’ll give up the idea of parting with him.’ Despite all the abuse and the dysfunctions of their relationship, Lucky still wants to stay with Pozzo, he does not want to break away from him. Even Pozzo seems to ultimately not want to sever their ‘ties’. Pozz needs Lucky just as much as Lucky needs Pozzo – they need each other on both an emotional and physical level. In fact, despite all of Pozzo’s attempts at severing their bonds, we see them in the second act, even more inexplicably tied to each other, with the shortening of the rope that ties them together, and with Pozzo losing his sight. They have become closer together, an d in a very concrete and actual way, they are now both completely physically, as well as emotionally reliant. When Pozzo falls, he drags Lucky down, and they cannot stand. We see them in the second act, now completely unable to separate themselves, because of the nature of their reliance. Although there is a less tangible bond between Vladimir and Estragon, they are strongly still tied to each other emotionally and physically. The nature of Vladimir and Estragon’s relationship is different though in that we get the distinct idea that they are indeed cognizant of their interdependence, through the constant denial of it. Estragon, in act one, looks for affirmation from Vladimir – ‘E: We’re not tied? We’re not –’ (p.12), before being cut off, and going on to a diffe rent topic of conversation. The ties that link Vladimir and Estragon to each other are also interesting, in that we see their relationship as the less amplified version of the relationship between Pozzo and Lucky, in terms of their social dynamics. In terms of their interdependence though, while there is an emotional component to both pairs need for each other, this emotional reliance seems much stronger with Vladimir and Estragon, than Pozzo and Lucky, who are largely physically reliant. This can be seen in the second act, wherein Pozzo and Lucky could not function without each other, yet Vladimir and Estragon can still be separated, if only for a night. Their metaphorical tie through their interdependence is something which shows the duplicity of their feelings for each other. There is this sense of both love and loathing with Vladimir and Estragon – they constantly talk about separating, in the hopes of improving their situation, yet this never happens, and they never actually act upon this desire. This contradiction of thought shows itself most thoroughly in the second act, when they see each other again. Estragon delcares ‘E: Don’t touch me! Don’t question me! Don’t speak to me! Stay with me!’ (p.49). Vladimir and Estragon are trapped in this situation of waiting for Godot, of desperately trying to mask this enveloping nothingness, with idle conversation, and mutual companionship. The ties that hold these characters together seem to be their only way of combatting the blankness and loneliness of their existences. Vladimir and Estragon are bonded to each other inexplicably through their need of companionship, but they are also bonded to each other through another tie, their tie to Godot. This seems to be the central core of their relationship, and indeed it seems to be the impetus of them staying together. Throughout the text, they repeat, almost mantra-like, the exchange ‘E: Let’s go. V: We can’t E: Why not? V: We’re waiting for Godot.’ (p. 6). They stay together, under the faà §ade of waiting for Godot, using this as an attempt to rationalise their inability to change or move. They seem to be unable to stay together, simply to stave off the loneliness, or at least, they cannot admit to this entirely. They can only admit to being tied to Godot, while being in a relationship that seems to be completely based on being bonded to each other. Vladimir states: ‘V: To Godot? Tied to Godot? What an idea! No question of it For the Moment’ (p.13) They m ust use Godot in order to reason staying together, despite showing time and time again how it is in fact their emotional reliance and need for companionship that keeps them from separating. Perhaps it is this falsehood which highlights their need so effectively. We are given the idea that this need for contact and human interaction is a fundamental, basic, and universal human need. It is no coincidence that Estragon, the representation of the visceral and the physical aspects of their relationship, is most concerned with being tied. It is Estragon who wants most to be with Vladimir, just as it is Estragon who often talks about parting. What shows their need as being universal even more is the characterisation of Vladimir, Estragon, Pozzo, and Lucky. Their personalities give us the ability to see this as an entirely human message as they have no completely defining universal traits, beyond their desires. This seems to allow us to so thoroughly empathise with the characters, to feel so strongly within ourselves the need for each other that they display so powerfully on the stage. One may argue that these literal and metaphorical ties show how we find self-definition through our goals in life, and indeed, this is a valid interpretation. I would argue though that more than this, it shows how utterly lonely it is, going through life, and how we cling so strongly to these ties, that become a form of limitation and bondage, all so that we can stave off loneliness, through that human contact that has been mentioned again and again. In the end, what seems to be most moving, and most human about these characters is that they fall so easily and so willingly to entrapment, to mask the bleakness that they find themselves in.

This mistake resulted in some sections of the test being canceled and forced the College Board to use an abnormal scoring method. To make amends for the mistake, the College Board offered a free retest for June 6th test-takers in October 2015. What’s the situation today? How did the retest go? What should you do if you took the June 6th test? I’ll address all of this and more in this news update. What Wasthe 5-Minute Mess Up? If you know the full story, feel free to skip this section and jump to the update.If you don’t know what happened on June 6th, I encourage you to read our full report on the situation, but here is a brief summary: On section 8 or 9 of the test (depending on your version), there was a typo in the test booklet which said you had 25 minutes to complete the section when in fact you were only allowed 20 minutes (which is what it says in the proctor instructions).As a result of this discrepancy, some proctors gave students 25 minutes for the section while other were given only 20 minutes. Due to the discrepancy, the College Board decided to cancel two sections of the test.They had to change their normal grading curve, which affected the reliability of the scoring.To pacify angry students (some of whom were threatening to sue), the College Board offered a free retest on October 3rd for all students who took the SAT June 6th. However, the College Board still released scores for all June 6th SAT test-takers, and the scores from that test date will still count as an official SAT score. Colleges should judgeSAT scores from June 6th the same as scores from other SAT test dates. In spite of the free re-test, many students and parents are still angry. SAT scores lead to a lot of emotions. What To Do If you took the June 6th SAT, what should you do? Whether you were happy, sad or ambivalent towards your score, I have advice for you! Option #1: Happy with Score from June If you’re happy with your score for the June 6th test, send that score!Colleges should view it the same as any other SAT score.Even if you took the free re-test in October, you could still opt to send the June 6th score.Your June 6th score still counts as an official score. Option #2: Very Unhappy with June Score If you were very unhappy with your June 6th score, you were not alone.I personally sat for that test date and received 760 in Math for one incorrect answer without skipping any questions (which would normally be a 780-800 on another test date). The grading curve was brutal, so many students were unhappy. If you fell into that unhappy group, hopefully, you did the free retest October 3rd, but if not, you should pay for a retest. I highly recommend doing SAT prep to try to improve your score. You could try self-study,tutoring, a class, oronline program; whatever prep path you choose make sure it is personalized to your needs. You need todetermine your areas of weakness andtry to improve in those areas. If you retest and improve your score significantly, you might be accused of cheating. Even if you’re not accused of cheating, your drastic score increase may seem suspicious to colleges (for schools that require all scores sent). I recommend that you use the additional information section of your common appto explain that you were very thrown off on June 6th by the timing confusion and that caused an abnormally low score. Option #3: Okay with June Score If you don’t love or hate your score, if it’s close to your target scorebut not exactly what you wanted, I’d consider re-testing if you have the time. Hopefully, you took the free October retest and did better, but if not, I suggest you make an effort to prep for your next SAT test either through self-study, tutoring, a class, oronline program. College Pressure Essay William Zinsser’s in his essay â€Å"College Pressure† published 1979, describes the pressures Yale students have economic, parental, and peer/self- induced. He says that these pressures make students afraid to take a risk and to try to take different paths. He wants them to believe in themselves and to try to enjoy their time in college. I have been a student at Reedley Community College for two years and the pressure I experience as a student and a mother are different from that the Yale student experienced. The first pressure that Yale students and I experience is economic pressure. Zinsser explains that in the 1970’s â€Å"tuition, room, and board at most private colleges comes at least $7000† (par.12).He also explains how much pressure Yale students are under, that â€Å"even if the [student] works part time during school and full time during the summer†, but accrue $5000 in loans after four years, loans that the [student] must start to repay within one year after graduation† (par.13). Then, Zinsser goes on to say that no matter how hard the student works he or she will be under pressure to pay back all the money he used. I relate to this pressure, but in a very different way. Although the cost of school for me is relatively low, I have four kids that are away at college. Having four children needing help with tuition and books puts a lot of financial pressure on me as a parent. Also, having six kids in general, three of which are girls, is expensive regardless. The country’s economic disparity has left personal finances tight and puts me under a lot of pressure to make sure my kids have everything that they need and that all bills are paid. Another pressure William Zinsser’s mentions is parental pressure which Yale students and I feel but slightly different .It refers to the amount of pressure students get from their parents. The students are being torn between pleasing their parents and pleasing themselves. Zinsser’s mentions that â€Å"often times students are walking to labs as though they are walking to the dentist.(par.15) Students are taking on majors in a course of study that they do not necessarily like, however, in order to keep their parents happy they take them on. They are under pressure because they want to please their parents but they’re unhappy they want to do. Because they aren’t doing what. Because I am an adult this pressure does not really apply to me. However, I do feel the pressure from my children. My children expect me to get good grades, as well as maintain everything in the house. When dinner is not made on time because of my homework, my children get upset. They also complain about laundry not being done quickly enough. Although they support me, their expectations of me put me under a lot of pressure. The final pressure that Zinsser mentions is Peer/ self-induced pressure which are a pressure that Yale students and I apply on us. Students apply unnecessary pressure on them by comparing themselves to their peers. Zinsser mentions that a student he calls Linda â€Å"who came in and said she was under terrible pressure because her roommate, Barbra was much brighter and studied all the time.† This student is a perfect example of making an unnecessary comparison which stresses her out. This pressure leads to students over work them-selves. â€Å"A professor will assign five-page papers†. â€Å"Several students will start writing ten-page papers to impress him.†(par.27). Instead of just following the guidelines of an assignment they are trying to shoot above and beyond the requirements. I can really relate to this pressure because I do add a lot of stress on myself. I immediately assume everyone is doing better than me which makes me work harder, but at the same time it causes me to over work myself. I have to make sure all my kids need are done, and then I stay up late to make sure all my school work is done. This pressure affects me negatively because I add a lot of stress on myself that does not need to be added. Instead of focusing on my growth academically. I am always worried about who is doing better than me in class. A couple of ways I am trying to manage my stress is by making daily and weekly to-do lists and putting the most important at the top and working my way down. It’s a great way to manage my time as well. Being that I am a mother of six, my stress level seems like it’s multiplied by seven and I need to be able to put some of that stress aside and finally focus on my schooling since my oldest is twenty-two and my youngest is thirteen. Another great way I make stresses more manageable is by keeping procrastination to a huge minimum. If work that is assigned gets gradually done before the due date, it won’t all pile up the night before causing you to panic. Stress always piles up and it occurs more than any of us would like, but it shouldn’t be a reason to fail. By overcoming these pressures, we become stronger at the end.

In American society, Psychology Today says people tend to consider masturbation â€Å"as a sexual refuge for singles† who are looking to â€Å"compensate for a lack of sex† (Castleman) and gives others the impression that one who masturbates in inferior or incapable of having sexual relations. However, Castleman’s article references a survey conducted by the University of Chicago that disputes this theory and suggests instead that â€Å"a sexless relationship [will suppress] masturbation† (Castleman). Historically, masturbation was thought to lead to serious medical side-effects; however this is not the case. As more and more doctors medically proved that masturbation is not physically harmful, others looked to support the idea that masturbation could possibly have positive health effects. Both of these factors lead to a greater normalization of masturbation today. Media plays a considerable role in our society’s sexual education and views. Most commonly, the stigma that masturbation is an inferior or weak sexual act crosses our television and computer screens often. For example, both â€Å"That 70s Show† and â€Å"Seinfeld† suggest that those who give in or fail to be â€Å"masters of his domain† (Chaney) are substandard to the rest of society. Physical evidence that masturbation and sexual pleasure are positive behaviors seems to be more evident now than ever before. Not only is the act arousing, but serotonin and â€Å"epinephrine [course] through your body† (Daniels), increasing one’s mood significantly. Also, many researchers argue that people who masturbate have a heightened sense of what pleases them sexually, which often leads to a better intimacy with a partner (... ...t I introduce in their sessions.
